What to Do When Your Air Conditioning Isn’t Cooling
One of the repair calls that HVAC professionals receive most often is the “no cooling” call. This is when a homeowner discovers that the central air conditioning system of a house is blowing out warm air instead of the crisp, cool air expected. There are many reasons for this occur, and in most cases it will take an experienced air conditioning technician to track down the malfunction and fix it. You will need the system repaired as soon as possible, especially if the problem happens on an extremely hot day. (Malfunctions are much more likely to occur under these conditions because of the extra stress placed on the AC.)
What you can do when this happens
- First, before you call for professional repairs, make a double-check on the thermostat. Is it set correctly? If it’s a programmable thermostat, look to see if the current program is optimized to make the air conditioner come on at the right time. If the thermostat screen is blank and the unit runs on batteries (not all do), change the batteries to see if this helps.
- Call for professionals if you can’t get the unit working with the thermostat. Then shut down the air conditioner entirely so that the system won’t have a chance to sustain further damage due to the malfunction.
- While you are waiting for the technicians to arrive, you can take some steps to keep the home cooled down. Close all shutters and draw the shades to keep out radiant heat from sunlight. Avoid using the oven or stove and turn off all unnecessary lights. Placing a bowl of ice before a fan can help blow cooled air around.
- Once the technicians arrive, you can be confident that they will quickly get to the root of the problem and have it solved so you can once more enjoy a cool home environment.
